Salsa lessons on the Gold Coast

Salsa is energetic, social and endlessly varied. Elite teaches the foundations that make Salsa transferable across real social dance floors: timing, weight transfer, partner connection, turns, footwork and musical awareness.

We recognise the major Salsa styles you are likely to encounter socially, including New York Style Salsa (On2), L.A. Style Salsa (On1) and Cuban Salsa. Rather than treating timing as an afterthought, we help dancers understand the rhythm and mechanics behind each approach.

Technique that travels with you

Good Salsa technique is more than learning patterns. We focus on leading and following clearly, moving efficiently, developing individual movement and understanding how to adapt to different partners. That foundation supports everything from relaxed social dancing to performance and competition goals.

A conversation without words

CONFIDENCE YOU CAN DANCE.

In our Salsa classes on the Gold Coast, partnerwork becomes a real-time conversation. You learn to hear the music, make clear choices and freestyle with another person - so the skills you practise in class can actually be used at parties and social dance nights.

01For men who lead

GENTLE. CLEAR. ASSERTIVE.

Leading develops a calm kind of confidence: taking initiative, giving clear direction and creating certainty without forcing the movement. For many men, it is a chance to step into a grounded masculine energy - decisive and assertive, while remaining attentive to the woman they are dancing with.

02For women who follow

TRUST. RESPOND. LET GO.

Following is active, expressive and responsive. Rather than having to plan every next step, a woman can learn to trust the lead, stay present and let the dance unfold. For many women, that creates a beautiful space to embrace feminine energy - softening, expressing themselves through the music and feeling comfortable enough to let go and be guided on the dance floor.

What we mean by social dancing

NO ROUTINE. NO REHEARSAL. JUST DANCE.

Our goal is for you to be able to hear a Salsa song, take someone's hand and freestyle with confidence - whether you're dancing with your partner, a friend or someone you've only just met. That is the freedom of social dancing: using lead, follow, timing and connection to create a dance together in real time.

Three ways to Salsa

Understand the Salsa family.

“On1”, “On2” and “Cuban” describe different ways Salsa is timed and structured. You do not need to understand them before you begin - but knowing the difference makes the social dance world much easier to navigate.

01L.A. Style Salsa

ON1

On1 Salsa is a linear style where the leader begins the main break action on beat one. It has a direct, energetic feel, with dancers moving along a line or “slot” through turns, cross-body leads and partnerwork.

For a beginner, the simplest way to think about it is: the phrase starts and you move straight into the action. On1 is widely danced socially, so understanding it gives you another timing you can recognise and adapt to when dancing with different people.

02New York Style / Mambo

ON2

On2 Salsa, often called New York Style or Mambo, is also danced in a line, but the main break action is emphasised on beat two. That changes how the movement sits inside the music and can create a smoother, more rhythmically connected feeling.

Rather than simply counting differently, dancers learn to hear where the movement belongs within the percussion and musical phrase. It is a sophisticated social style with strong emphasis on timing, connection, footwork and musicality.

03Casino / Cuban Salsa

CUBAN

Cuban Salsa is more circular than the linear On1 and On2 styles. Partners travel around one another with flowing changes of direction, rhythmic body movement and a playful, grounded relationship to the music.

You may also see Cuban dancers form a Rueda de Casino, where couples dance in a circle and respond to called moves together. For social dancers, Cuban Salsa adds another vocabulary for connecting, improvising and having fun with different partners.
